BBHT was formed by Berwick residents in 2017 as a charitable trust. Their central aim was to secure not only a long-term future for the Barracks buildings but also a permanent home there for the town’s historically important archives, its museum and the museum of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, the regiment for which Berwick Barracks was ‘home’ for many years.
The Trust has helped to fund some of the ensuing work on developing plans for the site and in 2021 published a history of the Barracks to mark the 300th anniversary of its opening.
The Trust’s objects also give its trustees discretion to support other arts, cultural, educational and heritage activities. This enabled it to assist publication the following year of a more substantial Guide to the County of Northumberland, which has since been reprinted. The preparation of a similar Guide to County Durham is currently underway.

Berwick Barracks Heritage Trust was set up by local people in 2017 to help drive a transformation of Berwick's historic Barracks. Our goals: to bring new life to a fascinating but timeworn group of buildings; and to play a dynamic part in Berwick's resurgence as a centre of heritage and creative enterprise.
