Our trustees

Sir Philip Mawer

Philip is a retired public servant whose roles included those of Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards and the Prime Minister’s Independent Adviser on Ministers’ Interests. He chaired the Benefact Trust – the owner of the Benefact Group of companies and one of the UK’s largest charitable donors – and was the founding Chair of the Northumberland Archives Trust. A Berwick resident since 2012, he chairs the Berwick Parish Church Trust and has been actively involved in developing plans for the future of the Barracks since 2015.


Stuart Bankier

Stuart retired in 2020 after working as an accountant for 35 years in marine insurance, food manufacturing and independent education.

 

He has lived in Berwick since 1990 and is currently a trustee and treasurer of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Preservation Trust and the Northumberland Archives Charitable Trust. He is actively involved in Berwick Heritage Open Days and is a passionate advocate of Berwick and its unique place in British history.

 


John Elliott

A retired barrister and former Specialist Crown Prosecutor, John moved to Berwick from Cambridge in 2017. 

 

He is a Citizens Advice adviser and a trustee of the North Northumberland Voluntary Forum, a charity which promotes and develops the work of voluntary organisations throughout North Northumberland - including those addressing feelings of loneliness and isolation caused by rural living, and exploring rural transport options.

 


Joe Lang

Joe worked in the theatre and corporate PR and advertising before founding a London corporate communications agency which he ran for 30 years.

 

Since moving to Berwick in 2010 he has served as a town councillor and Freemen Trustee. He is currently a trustee of the Maltings Berwick Trust and Berwick Visitor Centre, and chairs the Maltings Café.


Scott Sherrard

Scott spent his early working years in TV advertising, eventually managing two of London’s leading agencies. After moving north he was Commercial Director of Durham CC when it hosted the Ashes. Over the past 20 years he has helped develop major heritage destinations as diverse as the Mary Rose, Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, the D-Day Story, the Hill House, Painshill, and Leeds, Blarney, Brodie, and Alnwick Castles.

 

He has lived in Berwick since 2020 and chairs the Maltings Berwick Trust.
